Choosing the Right Powersports Vehicle: ATV vs. UTV

May. 1 2024 Miscellaneous By FFUN Motorsports

Powersports vehicles differ in various ways, however, it's not always that easy to distinguish between the good and the better. ATVs and UTVs are both awesome power sports vehicles with their own advantages and disadvantages. The question that lingers in all power sports enthusiasts' minds though is, which is the better option? We've got that answer for you.

Key Differences Between ATVs and UTVs

Let's look at a few key differences between the two vehicles.

UTVs

UTVs or Utility Task Vehicles are also referred to as side-by-sides. They are designed to appear more like a small regular vehicle. These vehicles are often used for work more than recreational activities. They come in a larger size than ATVs and come with a lot of storage space. You'll often find UTVs being used to haul feed, hay and other farming supplies. They also have many more uses beyond this and their popularity is steadily on the rise. Let's break up some individual features of the vehicle.

  1. Steering - Because they are built to handle more like a regular car, they are steered through a regular steering wheel.

  2. Seating and Capacity - UTVs can usually seat 2 to four passengers safely. Passengers can sit side-by-side which earned them the nickname side-by-side. They are also referred to as SxS also referring to the way passengers can sit in the vehicle.

  3. Speed/ handling - Reaching maximum speeds of between 25mph and 50mph, UTVs are faster and more powerful than ATVs.

  4. Braking/ Acceleration - These two features are both controlled by foot pedals.

  5. Safety Feature - UTVs are more equipped with safety features than ATVs are. They come equipped with seatbelts, and optional windshield and roll bars. UTVs sometimes come with fully enclosed cabins. These features offer greater stability and comfort over rough terrain.

  6. UTVs come equipped with a greater cargo capacity. The cargo space sometimes comes with a cargo bed and or towing capacity.

  7. Price - UTVs are more expensive than ATVs.

ATVs

ATVs or all-terrain vehicles, also known as quad bikes are known to have straddle-style seating and handlebars for steering. They are similar to motorcycles in design. Compared to UTVs, they are smaller, lighter and easy to maneuver. They are ideal for navigating narrow trails and rough terrain. Unlike UTVs, they are mostly used for recreational activities the likes of racing, hunting and trail riding.

  1. ATVs usually come as three or four-wheelers. These usually have a lower tire pressure compared to cars and UTVs.

  2. Steering - ATVs are steered by handlebars.

  3. Seating and capacity - The driver of an ATV sits in a straddle position and they are often built for a single rider. Some, however, can fit the driver plus one passenger.

  4. Speed - ATVs are not designed to carry heavy objects, so whatever weight is upon it determines how fast it goes. When operated under the right conditions, they are fast and can travel on various terrain.

  5. Braking/ Acceleration - Most ATVs come with a thumb throttle that can be pressed to control acceleration. These throttles are not the best design, however, given the unpredictability of the terrain. The driver is at high risk of pressing the throttle by mistake and causing an accident.

  6. Safety features - These vehicles rarely come with safety equipment. Some come with a minor safety feature, a metal roll cage in case the vehicle rolls over.

  7. Price - ATVs are a bit more budget friendly compared to UTVs. It is important, however, to take into account the added cost of safety features.

ATVs vs UTVs Which Is Right for You?

Which vehicle you choose between the two is ultimately up to you. It all depends on your reasons for needing an all-terrain vehicle. Think about why and what you need one for. For a more fun, recreational vehicle, ATVs are best. For less recreational purposes, UTVs will be a perfect fit. Don't forget to consider your budget as well.
