Preparing Your Boat for a Saskatchewan Winter
Saskatchewan offers four very distinct seasons with harsh winters that last from late December until early March. Average winter temperatures range from -18 to -25 degrees Celsius. When cooler fall air sets in, it's time to start thinking about winterizing your boat to ensure it's ready for spring when the ice thaws. At FFUN Motorsports, we offer a wide range of products and services to help you prepare your boat for the colder temperatures.
Clean Your Boat
When you take your boat out of the water, the first thing you should do it get it clean. After a summer in the water in Canada, your boat's hull has been exposed to the aquatic elements, including saltwater. Apply a boat cleaner and allow it to set for a few minutes. Use a scrub brush to brush away all the dirt and debris, then power wash the entire hull. This will prevent any rust and corrosion from occurring. Check for signs of damage, including blisters and cracks. Address these repairs before placing your boat in storage.
Flush Your Systems
Flush the cooling system with fresh water to remove any existing water and to eliminate any dirt, salt, grime and debris. Add antifreeze to keep any leftover water from turning into ice and causing cracking during a hard freeze. It's also a good idea to top off your fuel and add stabilizer to keep the fuel fresh through the winter. Changing your boat's oil and oil filters is always a good idea at the end of the season. This helps prevent acid from corroding the engine and ensures your craft is ready for the water when water weather returns.
Perform a Final Check
Your final check should include disconnecting the batteries and removing them from the boat to prevent them from losing their charge. Place moisture-absorbing packs, such as silica gel or dehumidifiers throughout the interior to safeguard against mold and mildew growth. Remove any loose items, such as a lifejacket, safety equipment or pfd. Finally, cover your board with a quality boat cover. The cover should have a snug-fit to prevent snow and water from getting in.
