What to Look for When Buying a Used Motorcycle in the Off-Season
The off-season is a popular time in Canada to buy a new-to-you used motorcycle. As tempting as it may be to run out and buy the first one you find, it's important to take a step back and consider several factors. Knowing what to look for and do, such as the following, can save you a lot of time, stress, and hassle.
Check the VIN
Check the VIN if you're buying a used bike from a private seller, even if it's someone you know. The last thing you want is to purchase a stolen vehicle. It's important with any motorcycle, but it's even more so if you're buying popular brands like Ducati or Harley-Davidson that are often favored targets by criminals.
Look Over the Bike for Damage
Keep an eye out for dents, scratches, corrosion, scrapes, and any other signs of damage on the motorcycle, especially in areas where the previous owner didn't mention there should be some. It's a red flag they're not being entirely truthful about the bike's condition.
Ask to Take the Bike for a Test Ride
Many bike owners won't have a problem with a potential buyer taking the bike for a test ride, especially if they're being truthful about its condition. It will give you a good chance to check out everything from its brake lights and exhaust system to its handlebars and headlight and all the components in between. If you're doing this as a new rider, make sure you have a driver's license first.
There's nothing wrong with evaluating everything when you're buying a used bike, right down to the foot pegs and coolant levels. Everything will indicate how well the bike was taken care of during its time with the previous owner. Unfortunately, there are sellers out there who will try to take advantage of people, especially if they think you're a newbie and you're interested in buying your first bike. Be your own advocate. Rather than purchase from a private seller, you can – of course – consider buying from a reputable dealership in Canada that has new and pre-owned inventory and available financing.
