Gearing Up For ATV Riding and Hitting Riding Trails

For outdoor enthusiasts and adventure seekers, there isn’t much better than heading out to the backcountry on your all-terrain vehicle (ATV). But before heading off-road for a day of trail riding, ensure you pack the essentials needed for riding ATVs. Whether you cruise on an ATV, side-by-side, or even a dirt bike, we’ve compiled a list of the right gear and items all UTV riders should carry. Number one, never forget to use common sense.

Protect your Body

Protecting yourself from harm is the first step to ensuring you have an enjoyable day of riding. To keep you safe, equip yourself with proper ATV riding gear, such as a helmet, goggles, gloves, riding boots, long sleeve shirt and long pants, plus pack extra clothing if there is cold weather. Any additional protective clothing you can pack along won’t hurt.

As a precaution, carry a first-aid kit, your identification, emergency contact, and a blanket just in case you get stuck in a place and can’t get out immediately.

Be Prepared for Rough Terrain

Part of heading out in off-road vehicles is having the equipment needed for any situation. If you are a serious Powersports person, heading into the backcountry poses added risk. There’s no doubt that you have or will get stuck at some point, so pack a tow strap and winch.

Remember, there are no gas stations in the wilderness. It’s one thing to break down and use your tool kit to repair your ATV; it’s another to run out of fuel, so pack extra gas. Even if you know where you are going, it will save you from having to walk and help protect the engine of your UTV.

Often people will set up a meeting point and “camp” where they can come back for a bite to eat and then head back out. However, you should always pack food and water in case you get lost or are away longer than anticipated.

Finally, always plan, including mapping out your route, GPS, and carrying a cellphone and radio.
